Ultra-Conservative Former Lawmaker J.A. Kast Elected as Chile Next Head of State.
After a definitive second-round vote, ultra-conservative politician José Antonio Kast has secured the presidency in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Victory
With more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast garnered 58.17% of the vote, beating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third bid for the presidency, having earlier been defeated by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Agenda Built On Security and Immigration
Noted for his staunch Catholic views and admiration for the period of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was mostly focused on promises to tackle rising insecurity and drastically reduce migration.
He consistently blamed migrants, especially the roughly 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the race, he issued an ultimatum for them to exit before the inauguration or face removal.
His plans featured Trump-inspired measures such as erecting holding facilities, high walls, perimeter fencing, and strengthening the military presence on the northernmost frontier.
Within a Regional Wave
Several observers view Kast's win as aligning with a larger rightward shift in Latin America, following this year's electoral results in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other pundits further view it as a extension of the regular alternation of power between left-wing and right governments since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.
Ruling Without a Strong Mandate
Despite his sweeping electoral win, Kast will not hold an overall majority in parliament, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if various conservative parties are grouped together.
This legislative situation could complicate his policy goals, such as a promise to reduce public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has yet to detailed a clear explanation.
"We have numerous aspects about what a Kast administration will operate that we don't know because he has not detailed how he will do them," noted a political expert.
The analyst added, "Regarding fiscal matters, it is very likely we will see spending cuts common for the right-wing. However the area with far less ambiguity is on law and order, because that has been his flagship issue during the race."
