Miami Heat & Trail Blazers Claim First Victories Following Recent Detentions

NBA game action

Miami recorded 86 opening half scores versus the Memphis Grizzlies

The Heat earned a decisive 146-114 victory against the Grizzlies in their first basketball game since guard Rozier was detained for alleged unlawful sports betting.

Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also arrested as part of a broad federal probe into illegal gambling. The two individuals contest the claims.

But, the Miami team were not distracted as they recorded 86 opening half points to be ahead of Memphis by 39 at halftime, the largest halftime lead in the team's 37 year history.

Adebayo led the way with twenty-four scores and afterwards said Rozier had the support of the team.

"We stand behind him. Full support," Bam stated. "You support him through and through. He's like family ultimately."

Heat coach Spoelstra added: "Terry is a person who is very dear to all of us. He's had a beneficial influence on our locker room.

"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he faces the situation."

The Trail Blazers also won their first game after the detentions, with Brazil-born Tiago Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and leading the squad to a decisive 139 to 119 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

"Everyone experienced positive times with Billups and how he coached," Splitter said. "We're thinking of him and his family but our focus is on the game."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' by Arrests

Addressing the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver stated he was "very upset" by the incidents of the past few days.

"Nothing is more critical to the NBA and supporters than the fairness of the competition," he informed Amazon Prime. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."

The commissioner further mentioned an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he played for the Charlotte Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"We were informed by the authorities and the betting companies," he added.

"We investigated that situation and were open about it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.

"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the league office is unable to.

"Therefore, we've been cooperating since then. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an indictment.

"Moreover 30 months later, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in justice to Terry.

"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a balance here between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
