The former official stated he would step back from public positions after House committee disclosed his repeated communications with Epstein

Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is leaving the directorate at OpenAI, just several days after a series of emails between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.

Summers stated in a statement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have served, excited about the promise of the enterprise, and look forward following their progress".

Summers, who previously headed the Ivy League institution, stated on recently that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his association with Epstein.

Email Communications

The recently released communications revealed that the economist exchanged messages with Epstein until the eve of the financier's 2019 detention for alleged sex trafficking of underage individuals.

In another announcement, the AI firm said it accepted the economist's determination to step down.

"We value his many contributions and the perspective he offered to the directors," the company stated.

Congressional Action

This development follows after both chambers of the legislative branch voted on recently to approve a legislation that would mandate the Department of Justice to disclose its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.

The bill will subsequently proceed to the administration of US President Donald Trump for approval. Trump has said he plans to approve the bill, after reversing his stance on the subject following pressure from his base.

Email Contents

A collection of financier-linked correspondence made public by the legislative panel recently referenced numerous high-profile figures in the Epstein's past associates, without implying any criminal activity by those people.

The communications indicated that Summers and the financier often met for meals, with Epstein often seeking to connect the academic to prominent global figures.

Personal Response

After the emails were released with the wider community, he expressed he accepted "total ownership for my ill-advised judgment to continue corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He further stated that he hoped "to rebuild faith and repair relationships with the persons closest to me".

Career Background

Summers occupied high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; acting as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under the former leader.

He headed the institution from the early 2000s and remains a professor there. When stating his withdrawal from public duties earlier on Monday, he stated he would persist with his educational duties.

Further Repercussions

Following Summers' declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a progressive research organization in Washington where he was a researcher, confirmed that Summers was no longer affiliated with the institution.

The former official joined the board of OpenAI, which makes ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its CEO the company leader.
