Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Considering a White House Bid in 2028
Gavin Newsom, a prominent Democratic figure, has revealed that he will determine whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections conclude.
"Yes, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," Newsom remarked when asked about seriously considering a campaign for president after the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."
Newsom's tenure as California's leader ends in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he noted that any determination is not imminent.
"The future will decide," he remarked.
Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary
Newsom has come to the forefront as a prominent opponent of the current federal leadership, using his online platforms and pushing a initiative that would boost Democratic House seats in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has invited attacks from political opponents.
Federal Funding Dispute
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor shows no concern about Californians in a weekend appearance on a major news network. Duffy disclosed a strategy to withhold government money from the state and warned eliminating the state's ability to issue commercial driver's licenses.
"I plan to withdraw $160m from California," Duffy declared, in the wake of a recently reported tragic collision in the state involving an unauthorized commercial driver that caused three deaths and injured individuals.
The governor's team pointed out that the federal government had approved the driver's employment repeatedly, which allowed him to receive a CDL under U.S. law.
Duffy had before announced he was withholding $40m from California for failing to implement English language requirements for CDL holders.
Firm Rebuttal from the Governor's Office
"One-time television figure, now transportation chief, continues to misunderstand federal law," Newsom's office retorted in a last month's release addressing the funding warnings. "For now, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: California truck drivers had a death rate much lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the only state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."
Voter Sentiment and Campaign Considerations
A this month's study found that a majority of the party and 48% of all registered voters said that the governor must consider running for the White House in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, public support for the governor has risen to an typical level of about one-third from previous levels, while his disapproval has decreased from an typical level of over 40% to 38.4%.
In previous months, Newsom stated while on a trip several key regions that he had "uncertainty" about his future for the next presidential election.
He also referenced his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the early childhood.
"The notion that a person who had modest test scores, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, extraordinary," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I await who presents themselves in the next election and who meets that moment. And that is the issue for the American people."
