Climate Heating in New England Faster Than the Vast Majority on Earth, Research Reveals.
The American area renowned for its colonial history, sweet syrup and frigid, snow-bound winters is experiencing a dramatic change. New research shows that New England is heating up faster than nearly any other place on the Earth.
Breakneck Pace of Transformation
The rate of warming in New England makes it the fastest-heating region of the continental United States, according to the research. The pace of its warming has reportedly accelerated notably in the past five years.
"The temperature is not only increasing, it's accelerating," said a lead researcher on the project. "It's really accelerated in recent years, which surprised me. Our regional climate is moving in a different trajectory, after being relatively stable for thousands of years."
The analysis positions the New England region among the fastest-warming areas in the world, together with the Arctic and parts of Europe and China. "New England is now heading towards being like the south-eastern US," the scientist added.
Analysis Methodology and Findings
For the study, researchers analyzed multiple data sources on daily temperature extremes and snow cover dating back to 1900. The review encompassed the six states of the New England region.
They discovered that New England has warmed by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This far exceeds the global average, with the planet heating by around 1.3 degrees Celsius in the same period.
"This represents very fast warming, which is alarming," said the study author.
Notable Warming Trends
- Nighttime temperatures are rising faster than maximum temperatures.
- Winters are heating up at twice the rate of other times of year.
- The severe cold New England is known for is being eroded.
Marine Factors and the "Energy Storage"
A primary reason for this exceptional build-up of heat may be shifts in the Atlantic Ocean. The world's oceans are taking in more than 90% of the surplus thermal energy trapped by greenhouse gases.
In the north Atlantic, an increase of cold, fresh water from Greenland’s melting glaciers is disrupting the Gulf Stream. This is directing warmer water into the Gulf of Maine, concentrating heat along the coastline that is then carried inland by wind patterns.
"Surplus thermal energy from global warming is being held in the oceans like a huge battery," explained the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the air and New England is a receiver of that energy."
Impacts on Life and Extremes
Once considered a relatively stable region, New England has experienced severe climate events in recent years, including devastating flooding and extended dry spells.
The increasing temperatures poses a threat to iconic elements of local culture:
- Maple syrup production is being affected by changing climate conditions.
- Cold-weather activities are disrupted; an hockey tournament on Vermont and New Hampshire lakes has been canceled or relocated multiple times due to unsafe ice conditions.
- Winter tourism have struggled because of insufficient snowfall.
"I reside just outside Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to skate on the ponds regularly," recalled the researcher. "That sort of thing has pretty much vanished from large parts of southern New England."
