Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Charity

Relinquishing unwanted presents could be considered somewhat rude – unless it's done in the proper manner.

A Charitable Clear-Out

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will offload an estimated 270 presents received by her by foreign dignitaries on official trips. The eclectic collection is said to contain objects like a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.

The presents, collectively, have an approximate value of €800,000. They are scheduled to be sold in a public auction by a Italian art dealer. A date has not been finalized, but the aim is to conduct the sale by year's end, with all funds raised going to non-profit organizations.

Palazzo Chigi Holdings

The presents are currently locked away in a secure area on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. Sources state that Meloni is also planning to auction off gifts received by her political forerunners that have been sitting unused for years.

A complete inventory is yet to be officially released, but partial details was gleaned earlier this year when a comprehensive document of official presents was submitted to lawmakers. The question raised if a statutory cap on gift value was being respected. According to regulation, a prime minister must declare presents exceeding €300.

A Global Assortment of Gifts

Notable gifts feature:

  • A scarf from the leader of Albania, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
  • A set of adornments from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the former US president.
  • A electronic pad from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Paintings from Moldova.
  • Additional objects including cosmetics, a skateboard, and several rugs received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the strangest gifts included the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," one might note.

Diplomatic Backdrop

The prime minister has received praise, particularly from within her party, with building relationships with foreign leaders and re-establishing Italy as a significant player on the global scene once again.

This charitable initiative represents a distinct method to deal with the protocol gifts that build up during a political career.
