Scorching conditions and intense wildfires have swept through the dry landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures forecast to persist climbing above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a major heatwave warning has been declared across much of the southwestern region.

This situation follow this month's bushfires in another state, which resulted in the destruction of properties and loss of life. Intense heat alerts have also been activated for later this week in areas within SA and New South Wales, as a system of atmospheric pressure moves eastward, delivering intense sunshine to a broad swath of the region.

The combination of tinder-dry land and unbroken high temperatures creates a dangerous scenario for firefighters.

In another part of the world, a major city was plunged into blackout last week after powerful winds compromised the city’s electrical network, with falling trees knocking out power lines. The weather conditions also led to major travel disruption at a major airport, where numerous air services were cancelled. Substantial damage to power systems is anticipated to create ongoing issues as utility companies scramble to restore power to more than 1 million inhabitants.

Unusual Mist Blankets Typically Clear Region

At the same time, a valley known for its sunny weather and abundant sunshine has endured one of its grayest and most overcast periods on recorded history. A specific type of fog, which typically lasts for only a short time, has been unusually extensive and long-lasting this year, holding the mercury at a key transport hub below 8C for over a week – the longest such streak in over three decades. The prolonged haze has been driven by exceptional autumn rainfall that left the ground waterlogged.

Storm Delivers Wintry Weather to Tourist Destination
