The incident took place on Monday morning when an IED planted beneath a vehicle exploded, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov served as the head of the armed forces' department for training operations.
Authorities indicated that one possible explanation involves the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. At this time, Ukraine has remained silent.
Scene of the Incident
Personnel have been dispatched to the site, which is understood to be in a southerly district of the metropolis.
Accounts state the explosion took place in a parking area close to a residential building.
History of Assaults
Since the onset of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military officials have been targeted within Moscow.
This latest event echoes other high-profile incidents, including:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a bomb placed on a scooter was detonated remotely.
While a Ukrainian source earlier connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such allegations are never formally acknowledged as a matter of standard practice.
The war has increasingly seen shadowy operations extending into the heart of the Russian capital.
The investigation into General Sarvarov's death is still underway.
